Poverty and Tax Exemptions in Mid-Nineteenth Century Finland

The topic of this article is the nature and social character of Finnish rural poverty during the early stages of industrialization. Specifically, I analyze households exempted from two separate taxes in order to locate and study the rural poor. Contrary to several previous considerations deeming taxation sources unreliable in poverty studies, it is shown that under controlled settings tax exemption information does display promising features. These include a high exemption percentage of households without adult male members, small average household size of the tax exempted and a clear concentration of the exemptions on the lower rural social classes. Unequal poverty and equal industrialisation: Finnish wealth, 1750–1900

We present the first comprehensive, long-run estimates of Finnish wealth and its distribution from 1750 to 1900. Using wealth data from 17,279 probate inventories, we show that Finland was very unequal between 1750 and 1850; the top decile owned about 90% of total wealth. This means that Finland was more unequal than the much wealthier economies Britain, France and the US, which goes against the common assumption of richer economies being more unequal. Moreover, when industrialisation took off in Finland, inequality started a downward trajectory. This chapter analyses how Finnish male truck drivers (re)produce themselves as respectable male workers in the face of the recent economic, technological and institutional transformations impacting the European haulage sector. The investigation is based on ethnographic data which are produced by riding along on assignments with ten male Finnish truck drivers in the period 2012–2016. The analysis shows how truck drivers’ independence and value in the work process has become challenged and how truckers experience being occupationally stigmatized. Kiili selvitti 6–12-vuotiaiden lasten osallistumisen mahdollisuuksia ja rajoja tutkimalla jyväskyläläisen lapsiparlamentti Ipanoiden toimintaa lukuvuonna 2000–2001.Yleensä lapset ymmärretään kasvavina ja kehittyvinä tulevaisuuden ihmisinä. Tätä lapsikuvaa tutkitut lapset eli Ipanat ymmärsivät, mutta halusivat myös kritisoida. Tulevaisuusorientoitunut ajattelu rajoitti lasten toiminta- ja osallistumismahdollisuuksia.
